So I was thrilled to be contacted by Staples.com to write a review for the new Samsung Chromebook. My expectations turned out to be totally justified, because this lovely little Chromebook (on which I am typing right this second) is light, portable, and perfect for every single thing I do online.
For those of you who are wondering what a Chromebook is, let me explain. Several years ago, Google released their own operating system called Google OS. It is basically an operating system similar to Windows or Mac, but totally web-based. Since almost everything I do on a laptop I do online, the Chromebook is perfectly compatible with my user style. As long as I have a wifi connection, I’m good to go.
Here are the main specs:
- Weighs in at just under 2.5 lbs.
- 11.6″ screen with 1366 x 768 resolution
- Comes loaded with 2GB of memory and 16GB of storage
- 2 USB ports
- Headphone/Microphone jack
- HDMI port
- Bluetooth compatible
- 7 hour batter life
In the week I’ve had my new Chromebook, I haven’t missed my regular laptop once. That alone should tell you how valuable it is. In fact, there are very few things not to like about this device. However, this isn’t the machine to entirely replace the family laptop or PC. If you need to consisitently run non web-based programs like Word, this isn’t likely for you. For example, my kids won’t be able to use the Chromebook for their CD based math curriculum.
Another slight complaint I have is that there is no DELETE key on the keyboard. Apparently, I use that key often because I’m in the habit of looking for it.
I fully expect to use my Chromebook often during the school year, for blogging, research, photo editing, social media, general writing, and for fun. I already raved about it to a friend who then bought one for her teen daughter to use at school. For the price of just under $250, I can’t imagine she’ll be anything but thrilled with it.
I love my new Chromebook and expect to continue loving it (and arm wrestling it from my children) for years to come.
Along with the Chromebook, I received a new Targus backpack to carry it around in.
It’s roomy, with a laptop sleeve that will fit laptops up to 17″. Plus, there are plenty of pockets to stash your mp3, cell phone, calculator, notebooks, and pens. It looks tough enough to withstand the beating I’m sure my high school son will give it.
And today, dear readers, Staples.com is offering you the chance to win $100 to spend on the backpack or laptop bag of your choice! All you need to do is visit Staples.com and leave a comment here telling me which bag you’d choose.
